MICROWAVE QUESTIONS
1. What is the best way to clean the inside of my microwave?
Before cleaning any part of a microwave, be certain that the circuit breaker is turned off.

Commercial oven cleaners or abrasive cleaners should never be used on any part of a microwave. Also, GE does not recommend the use of any product containing alcohol or ammonia.

Interior Cleaning

  • Some spatters can be removed with a paper towel, others may require a damp cloth. Remove grease spatters with a sudsy cloth, then rinse with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or sharp utensils on oven walls.
  • If food has cooked on, heat one cup of water on full power for three minutes (heat and steam help to soften spilled on food), let it stand for five minutes, and then clean as usual. Note: Be sure that the water has cooled before removing the container.
  • For stainless steel interior of microwave/convection models, use a hot, sudsy cloth to remove grease and splatters.

Note: Oven Magic may be used for interior cleaning. This is not like a regular oven cleaner. Oven Magic cleans and kills bacteria without leaving an odor to food, and will not scratch the surface.

Exterior Cleaning

  • Door surfaces: Use only mild, non-abrasive soaps or detergents applied with a sponge or soft cloth.
  • Control panel: Follow door surfaces directions. Avoid excess moisture and do not spray any solution directly on the controls.
  • Cord: If the cord becomes soiled, unplug and wash with damp cloth. For stubborn spots, sudsy water may be used, but be certain to rinse and dry thoroughly before plugging cord into outlet.
2. How do I set the clock on my microwave?
How to Set the Clock on a MIcrowave Initially or after a Power Outage

On most model GE microwaves, the procedure for setting the clock is as follows:

  • Press CLOCK
  • Touch number pads that reflect the time of day - 1:45 would be 1, 4, 5.
  • Press CLOCK orSTART to lock in the time.

Note: Some of our newer models also have AM/PM indicators - in these models, you must indicate whether the time of day is AM or PM prior to pushing START or CLOCK .

Note: Door must be closed when entering the time of day on most models.

If you prefer to have no clock display on the face of your microwave, disconnect the power for 20 to 30 minutes, then after restoring power, do not set the clock.

Some newer microwaves feature an ON/OFF clock display pad. This option allows you to set the clock (so that all functions work), but not have the time displayed if there are multiple clocks in the kitchen. To choose this option on models so equipped, press the 0 pad for about three seconds to turn the clock display on or off. Even though the clock is not displayed, other cooking functions will be displayed as usual. At the end of a cooking function, once the door is opened to remove the food, the clock display will appear blank if clock has been turned off.

3. Can I use metal in my microwave?
The Use of Metal in the Microwave

Metal cookware should not be used in a microwave. Metal will not allow microwaves to penetrate; the food behind the metal will not be cooked. The metal could also cause arcing in the oven.

However, microwave convection ovens can use metal and foil safely during the convection cooking.

Metal (aluminum foil) can be safely used in a microwave but certain guidelines must be followed to prevent damage to the oven. The following describes the proper use:

  • Aluminum foil is used to shield portions of a food item to prevent overcooking. (i.e.:leg tips and wings of a turkey or ends of a leg of ham). It should be a small amount of foil when applied and it should also be pressed close to the food item. No foil should be sticking up or out away from the food product. "Flags" or pieces of foil standing up will work as an antenna which could cause arcing.
  • Do not completely cover any food item with aluminum foil. Do not leave metal twist ties on bread packages or other plastic bags when warming a food product. The metal twist ties act as an antenna, and will cause arcing and possible damage to the oven.
  • Metal clamp on a turkey will have to be left in while defrosting since it is frozen into the bird. It is not a problem because of the size of the food product and the majority of the metal clamp is covered by portions of the bird. However, the clamp should be removed once the bird has defrosted, and is ready for cooking in the microwave.
4. Why is the turntable in my microwave not turning?
The Turntable Is Not Turning

To minimize the possibility of electric shock, unplug this appliance from the power supply before attempting any maintenance or cleaning.

  • Make sure the turntable is centered and seated properly. On models with a stirrer motor there is a shaft protruding up through the floor of the microwave. Make sure the turntable is securely fastened to this shaft. On models that turn on a ring with wheels attached, make sure the turntable is seated securely on the ring.
  • Check the turntable to make sure it is placed right side up. If the turntable plate is upside down it will drag on the floor of the microwave.
  • Finally, be certain you are pressing a cook function rather than a timer function.
5. How do I change the power level on my microwave?
Changing Microwave Power Level
  • Press "Time Cook" or "Micro Cook."
  • Enter cooking time.
  • Press "Power Level".
  • Select a desired power level 1-10 (default is 10).
  • Press "Start"
